For the casual observer, this transition period is a treasure trove of deep-sky objects, bright stars, and planetary cameos. But the idea of a “marathon” often implies an all-night affair, a test of endurance against dew and drowsiness. There is, however, another way: the one-hour spring stargazing marathon. It is a sprint, a focused blitz that captures the season’s absolute best sights without demanding a full night of sleep.

The Prime Window: Timing the Transit

The key to a successful one-hour marathon is not the date, but the hour. Aim for the sweet spot approximately 60 to 90 minutes after astronomical twilight ends, which in mid-spring (late April to mid-May) falls roughly between 10:30 PM and 11:30 PM local time. This window offers a crucial advantage: the sky is fully dark, but the constellations of the spring sky are at their highest, most brilliant point, free from the murky haze that clings to the horizon.
